  • What do I need to do to sign up - what's the next step?
    Register at FlexIntoUX.com and keep an eye out for email updates. We have rolling registration, so feel free to tell friends and family to sign up too! To sign up for specific classes, create an account here. This will give you access to the schedule, course materials, and email correspondence with updates.
  • Are there education requirements to participate?
    Not at all. All experience levels are welcome. However, if you are an industry professional, perhaps you would find it more fulfilling tovolunteer as an instructor, mentor, or Design-a-thon judge!
  • Are there age requirements to participate?
    Because we do not screen participants who will have to work closely together without supervision, we require that all participants be 18 by July 1, 2023. If you know a minor who is interested in UX, please let us know and keep an eye out for future developments. In the meantime, BPL has an array of resources that may be helpful!
  • Will there be other sessions in the future?
    Flex into UX is a collaboration between Kingsborough Community College (KCC) and the Brooklyn Public Library's (BPL) Incubator project. While there are many educational and career development opportunities through both KCC and BPL, this specific program currently only runs from July-September 2023. Registration will remain open throughout the program, so please, feel free to sign up and get started right away!
  • English is not my first language. Can I still join?
    This program is designed to help remove barriers to entering the Tech industry. While you will need a strong foundation in both written and spoken English in order to participate in the program, we do not require a proficiency test and leave the judgement of your fluency up to you.
  • Do I need to do anything before the program starts?
    Yes. 1. Please create an account for Flex into UX here on our website. 2. If you were unable to attend the info session, please view it here. 3. If you do not already have one, Sign up for a BPL Library card online or at a local branch. * Note: BPL libraries are not part of NYPL or Queens Library systems. If you have one of those, you will still need a Brooklyn Library Card.
  • Is there a skill level requirement for this program?
    None at all. All experience levels are welcome. However, if you are an industry professional, perhaps you would find it more fulfilling to volunteer as an instructor, mentor, or Design-A-Thon judge!
  • I already have some training in UX -- is this program for me?
    This workshop series is meant to teach basic UX design concepts and tools. If you are looking to refresh your knowledge of design fundamentals, we welcome you to join any and all of our workshops! If you are looking to put your existing UX design training into practice, our Design-A-Thon will provide participants with an opportunity to work with a team and solve a problem using design concepts. *You are welcome to participate in the Design-a-thon without taking the course.
  • I already have some work experience in UX -- is this program for me?
    If you are looking to refresh your knowledge of design fundamentals, we welcome you to join any/all of our workshops. If you are looking to put your existing UX design training into practice, our Design-A-Thon will provide participants with an opportunity to work with a team and solve a problem using design concepts.
  • Will this culminate in a certification or certificate?
    You will receive a certificate of completion. Our goal is to provide a free resource for participants to kickstart their UX Design journey. Upon completion, participants will walk away with a basic understanding of human-centered design, visual design, and UX design tools. From there, individuals can continue learning on their own or we can recommend further UX design education based on their needs.
  • What sort of classes can we expect and what subjects will be taught?
    Introduction to UX Design & Human Centered Design User Research, Personas, User Stories Introduction to Visual Design Color Theory, Typography Figma, Grids, and Prototyping Usability Testing Presenting a UX Design Project UX State of the Market UX Career Specializations
  • Will all the classes be online?
    In order to accommodate participant and volunteer schedules, weeknight classes will be conducted online over Zoom. However, some interactive sessions are better taught in-person, under the guidance of an industry professional. These workshops and in-person make-up sessions will take place at BPL’s Central Library on Saturdays.
  • How often will classes take place?

  • How long will the classes be - how many minutes / hours?
    Most workshops will be 2-3 hours. Online remote classes are 3 hours Super Set Saturdays with a Spotter run from 10am-4pm with an hour break in between sessions. See our calendar for specific workshop topics, dates, and times.
  • What time and day of the week will the classes be offered?

  • Do I have to attend classes live?
    No, but they are helpful. Please sign up/log in to see our calendar. Workshop dates and times are also in the Syllabus.
  • Do I have to attend all of the classes?
    Life happens. We understand that you may have a busy schedule and may not be able to attend all classes. We offer weeknight remote classes and Saturday classes in-person. While it is in your best interest to attend classes, we will also provide recordings and a list of readings for all classes online so that you have the opportunity to catch up.
  • Will there be homework?
    Yes and no. There isn’t a homework submission requirement. However, instructors will provide exercise problems for students to practice on their own time.
  • What is a Design-A-Thon? What's involved? What will I need to do?
    People of all experience levels compete in teams for a chance to earn great prizes and create/ add to their portfolios. During the Design-A-Thon, participants will be divided into groups and asked to collectively come up with a solution to some design problem which affects the Brooklyn community. Participants will be able to use their work in this Design-A-Thon to start their own professional portfolio, which they can then include as part of their application materials in their job search or in an application for training or college study.
  • Will classes be recorded? Will the recordings be shared?
    Classes will be recorded and shared with participants who have registered for the classes.
  • Is there a distinct difference between UX design and UI design?
    Yes. You will learn more about this in class, but generally speaking: UX Design focuses on the experience a user has when interacting with a product. UI Design focuses on the aesthetic elements users interact with (ex. buttons, icons, menu bars, typography, colors, etc).
  • What kind of design software will we be working with during the program? Do I have to buy anything?
    We will use Figma, a FREE, web-based, program. You do not need to use other programs for the class, but feel free to explore the list of optional programs listed on the Syllabus.
